Our first morning in Edmonton went something like this...
We wanted to pick Debi up so Peggy gave her a phone call to get the address. We had a GPS (which was named Carmen - because she sounds like a Carmen complete with sexy British accent).
Peggy - Hi Debi! We're coming to get you! What is your address?
Debi - 5454 34th ave. It should only take you a few minutes (address has been changed, of course, to protect Debi from swarms of blogging tourist buses driving past her home - "And to your left is the home of Debi ...").
Peggy - Okay, 5454 87th street...
Debi - No Sweet Pea, that's 34th Ave.
Peggy - Right, 34th.
Debi - 5454 34th Ave. See you soon!
Peggy begins to punch the address into Carmen and we are off. The conversation is random, the traffic lite, the eternal roadside construction notorious in downtown Edmonton flashes by. Livi misses the turn, pulls off the street, Carmen has a cup of GPS tea to start her day and recalculates...
We cross a bridge, past more street construction and over a hill.
Peggy - This is taking too long. I better see if I put in the right address.
Peggy laughs. - I put in 87th street.
Livi - But Debi told you what the street was TWICE!
Stacy - How did you get 87th from 34th Peggy? I could see putting in 43rd but 87th?
Karina tells her husband (who just happens to call at that very moment) all about what is going on between peals of laughter (I'm sure he felt we were having far too much fun and was tempted to gather our husbands to come intervene...)
Carmen recalculates. We laugh merrily. Construction flys by. We drive back towards the city center - a more seedy part I must say...
Stacy - Peep shows for 25cents?! I had no idea those were still around. Livi! Let's stop and check it out!
Livi - No.
Stacy - Oh come on. It's only 25 cents! I have to see a peep show before I die or I haven't lived!
Livi - No.
We drive about giggling shamelessly, talking about our husbands and passing roadside construction.
Peggy - This is still taking too long. I wonder if I put the address in right?
Peggy - Is it 34th Street or Avenue?
Everyone - Avenue!
Peggy - Oops.
Carmen recalculates, we pass the peep show again. Stacy tries to convince Livi to pull over.
Livi - No.
(oh course, I don't really want to see, not really - I'm only being facetious and ridiculous because, well, my children weren't around. The idea is rather disgusting. I had no idea those still existed. It's scary what a person will do for a quarter!)
Peggy phones Debi who has wondered if we fell down a manhole or stopped at a peep show or something. We arrive at our destination giggling and embracing and ready for more adventure.
