Sarah and the Fairy
by Abby Witbeck age: 10
Once upon a time there was a girl named Sarah. She had the most beautiful brown curly hair and she was very pretty. All her life she had been in an orphanage now she is ten. She really hated the orphanage it was the most gloomy place she had ever seen well the only place she really seen, but it was disgusting. All the little girls and boys were not very nice to her and there was very little to eat.
The boys and girls were teasing her, so that night before she went to bed she wished for a fairy to help her get out of that dreadful place. The next morning Sarah didn’t get up very early and all the kids were down having breakfast. She woke up and heard a very funny sound. It was a little black cat. It didn’t have a collar or anything, but she thought it was so cute. She picked it up and saw a little name right on its paw. The name was Sabrina.
“What a nice name for a cat”, thought Sarah.
Sarah got up and got dressed. She didn’t want anyone to see Sabrina so she left her in her room while she went downstairs to eat breakfast. Sabrina didn’t fuss while Sarah was gone. When Sarah was done her breakfast she ran upstairs to her room and Sabrina was gone, but there was a lady there dressed all in black. Sarah was very surprised and said, “who are you and what are you?”
“I’m Sabrina and I’m a fairy.”
“So are you the cat that I saw this morning?” said Sarah.
“Yes I am. Sorry if I frightened you."
“That’s ok,” said Sarah, “You must be the fairy I wished for last night.”
“I must be,” said Sabrina. “So why did you wish for me anyways?”
“ I want to get out of this place,” said Sarah. “I need your help. Please, will you help me?”
“Yes I will,” said Sabrina, “watch this.” She turned right back into a cat.
“Wow!” exclaimed Sarah. “that’s amazing!”
“I know,“ said Sabrina.
“So who sent you here?”
“My fairy leader, Miss Mallory,” said Sabrina. “She is the most powerful fairy in all fairyland. So now how are we going to get you out of here without anybody noticing us?”
“Ok, I’ll tell the mistress that I found a cat and that I’m going to take you outside and walk you around,” said Sarah.
“But what if she gets suspicious?”
“Well, I don’t know,” thought Sarah. “Hmmm, can’t you just zap us out of here. Don’t you have powers or something?”
“Oh yes, I forgot about that,” giggled Sabrina. “I’ll get my wand, just one moment.” So Sabrina got her wand but when she pulled it out of her bag it was broken.
“Now what?” sighed Sarah.
“I don’t know,” said Sabrina “we’ll have to go with your other plan.”
“Ok,” said Sarah. “I’ll go tell her. You wait here.“
So Sarah went downstairs and told her the mistress about the cat. The mistress had just woken up from a nap and was quite sleepy. She gave Sarah the keys to the back door. Sarah got her luggage and carried Sabrina outside. The children were so busy playing they didn’t even notice them.
“Phew that was a close one,” panted Sarah.
“Do you know where your parents live?,” asked Sabrina.
“Not really."
“What is your last name?” asked Sabrina.
“My last name is Small."
“It’s small? How small?” said Sabrina.
“No silly, that’s my last name.” laughed Sarah.
“Oh,” giggled Sabrina. “Lets go to the library and look for the last name Small."
“What if we just asked some people?” suggested Sarah.
“That sounds good."
So they asked some people and they all said they lived in a little house in Rosetown , a little ways out of town. Sarah and Sabrina went on their way. That night they slept under an oak tree. They had brought some blankets so they weren’t very cold. Sarah was thinking about the orphanage. Would the mistress be worried? And she also thought about seeing her parents. “I wonder what they are like,” she thought “and will they like me?” That night she didn’t fall asleep very fast and then she dreamed of all the things she would do with her mother and father.
The morning was misty and cold. They hurried to eat something and then started on their way. Half way there Sarah was so excited to meet her parents so she said, “Sabrina do you think my parents will like me?”
Sabrina said, “probably, you are their little girl aren’t you?”
“Yes, but they had to give me to the orphanage because they didn’t have enough money to feed me. I hope they still want me,” worried Sarah.
“Do you think you can stay with me when we get to my parents?” asked Sarah.
“I don’t think so I have other little girls and boys to help. I can’t stay with you all the time but I know you will be happy."
“Thanks, Sabrina. Oh look I see Rosetown. What a nice place it is. Don’t you think so Sabrina?”
“Yes,” said Sabrina. “We need to find out exactly where they live. Do you remember your parents names?“
“I think so,” said Sarah. “They are Elizabeth and George but I’m not sure how we are going to find them. Lets ask if any one knows an Elizabeth and George.”
“Ok,” said Sarah. They went to a store and asked the cashier, “do you know an Elizabeth and George Small.” “Yes, I do know them,” said the cashier, “they live on the other side of town, why do you ask?”
“I’m looking for them,” said Sarah “thank you very much, goodbye,” said Sarah. They left in a hurry.
“This is going to be exciting,” said Sarah. “How long do you think it will take us?"
“I don’t know, lets just keep walking."
“Hey, I think I can see it”, exclaimed Sarah.
There was a small house about the size of the store it was grey and white. “Very pretty,” said Sarah. She rang the doorbell.
“Who is it?” called a very nice voice.
“It is Sarah.“
“Oh do come in,” said the lady. She had the most beautiful brown hair Sarah had ever seen! She was wearing a long yellow dress.
“Are you Elizabeth small?” said Sarah.
“Yes I am, why do you ask?” said the lady.
“I’m Sarah Small, are you my mother?” asked Sarah.
“Yes Sarah my sweet sweet Sarah, however did you find me?” asked her mother.
“I had to ask a lot of people to find you,” said Sarah.
“Why did you come?” said Sarah’s mother.
“Mother I had to get out of that orphanage, it was awful. The kids always teased me and mocked me. It wasn’t fun. I just had to escape. It was the only way to stop them. Where is father?” asked Sarah.
“He is at work,” said her mother. “He works at a store on the other side of town.”
“I think I talked to him to ask where you lived,” said Sarah “I can’t wait to see him.”
“I want you to meet some one. She helped me escape. Her name is Sabrina. She is a fairy and she’s right here.” Sarah turned around and nobody was there.
Sarah said, “where are you Sabrina?“ But no one answered.
“Come in child, it’s getting cold,” said Elizabeth.
“ I swear she was right here,” said Sarah.
“Ok, Sarah I think your seeing things, come in and have a rest you must be tired.”
“I am,” said Sarah and they went inside and had some hot chocolate.
