It is tradition, after the song is sung and the candles are extinguished, for the birthday person to make the first cut in the cake. I am not really sure how that tradition started or why. It is of no consequence any longer. Emma has innocently and single handedly changed the birthday cutting of the cake ceremony.
Emma stared in the face of tradition, took her fork and dug into the cake. What a brilliant move! What a perfect thing to do when confronted with a large chocolaty slab of birthday confection. This move was so simple in it's brilliance that we hung in the moment, mouths open - eyes wide marveling at the vurtuoso before us.
Only a curly haired 3 year old could make so bold a move. She was born an adveturer swashbuckling the confines of culture and custom... And, don't you just love the pillowcase dress I made for her using retro curtains!?
