He ran 80 km in 9.5 hours - and lived! I can't tell you how much I just don't get why. What motivates a person to push themselves past the happy confines of comfort into the harsh world of struggle, fatigue and pain? At one point, he describes how he had to make promises to his legs. "Legs, if you run for the next 3 km, I promise I'll let you walk for the 3 km after that." And his legs agreed! Good thing I wasn't his legs 'cause I would have probably kicked him in reply before I collapsed and called out for a hot bubble bath, a lengthy massage and several helpings of cookie dough ice cream.
When I ask him why he does what he does he can't tell me. He shakes his head, shrugs his shoulders and smiles silently to himself. And yes, he wants to do it again. Matter of fact, a week later he ran another 22 km in 2 hours.
He's insane - it's complete insanity. I can't fathom what else it could be...
I have a gnawing feeling that if I can only comprehend this kind of crazy I would be unstoppable. All my dreams, schemes and hopes would be realized: all the books I envision writing; all the quilts I could be sewing; all the art galleries I imagine filling and the broadway stages I would be gracing; all the doctorates I dream of earning; all the laundry I should be washing, folding and putting away!!! I could do it all! Any little whim that showed up at my door step of desire could be taken in and satisfied. Imagine it, dear friend, imagine the possibilities of actually getting something done - something big, something amazing, something hard, something from beginning to end.
This madness is the steroid required for accomplishment behind the answer to the the question, "if you could do anything what would it be?" I got to get me that brand of crazy.
But first I think I'll go take a nap...
This is pretty darned funny! All that ambition, all that ability, all that self-discipline ---- to run races?!?!?
Makes me want to take a nap, too. . .
